Bay girls tackle big challenge

There are only 55 Maui dolphins left in the world an seven Bay of Plenty girls are doing their utmost to help resolve the problem.

Hayley Dunlop, Lottie Clark, Flora Clark, Liv Hawkins, Pipi Kendal, Zora Dunlop and Rachael Dunne are taking part in the World Wide Fund for Nature's (WWF) Challenge 55.

Maui dolphins are unique to New Zealand and there are only 55 left in the world. The WWF state on their website the dolphins are at risk from netting and trawling and only half their habitat is protected.

WWF has started up, Challenge 55 to raise funds and awareness of the dolphins' plight. Participants are asked to either run 55 kilometres back 55 cakes or even go without technology for 55 hours as part of the challenge.

The girls who attend either attend Otumoetai Intermediate or Matua Primary baked cupcakes and where selling them down on Marine Parade today, as part of their challenge says supporter and organiser Kate Graeme.

She says the girls are passionate about what is happening to the dolphin and want to play their part.

The girls baked cupcakes and made their own shirts for their challenge today. All the money raised goes to WWF.
