Bay police shooting case pushed back

The man accused of shooting four Bay of Plenty police officers near Kawerau on March 9 has had his case remanded off until next month.

Coastlands man Rhys Richard Ngahiwi Warren, 27, was arrested and charged with four counts of using a firearm against police following a 22 hour armed siege in Onepu, near Kawerau.

Warren was originally expected to appear in Tauranga District Court via audio visual link today, but the appearance date has been changed to June 15 in the Rotorua High Court.

He is accused of shooting four police officers during an armed siege which lasted around 22 hours, before Taupo area commander Warwick Morehu walked into the property and talked Warren into handing himself over to police without incident.

At the time of the arrest, Renee Wetini said her son had text them saying he did not want to go back to prison.

Warren had been out of prison for two years before the Onepu incident took place.

During Warren's initial appearance in the Whakatane District Court on March 10, Judge Rollo granted name suppression to the four injured police officers which is set to continue.

If convicted of the charges Warren will face a maximum of 14 years' prison.

Sounds harsh I know but if this person was to shoot at other countries cops or armed forces they would have shot him dead, save all this pussyfooting around after the event. He showed no mercy and until we toughen up, people like this will continue to offend. Get tough on violent crime NZ.

Shoot first then not want to go back to prison! Should have thought about that before he did the deed.
