Last year's champion Avon Compton of North Wellington has made it safely through section play in the singles yesterday. He posted four straight wins to go through to post-section play today.

Two players each with nine national titles, and looking for a 10th for a second gold star, Paul Psaila from Auckland and Mike Phipps from Tauranga, both qualified. Four times national champion Kevin Boothby of Thames Valley, also made it through section play.

Other four-time winners safely through are Mark Ridley from North Taranaki, Nigel Warnes from Golden Bay, Hayden Warnes also from Golden Bay, Teri Anderson from Waikato and Paul Midgley from North Taranaki.

One surprise was the failure to qualify in the singles of James Sullivan from Canterbury who was player of the tournament at the Timaru nationals last year. Another upset was the departure of six-times national champion John Zittersteijn of North Taranaki.
