Medic on hand for shooting

The man shot by police in Rotorua this afternoon was shot twice in the stomach, says Kawerau paramedic Graeme Erikson.

The former Royal New Zealand Airforce medic who has experience with gunshot wounds had been stuck in traffic near the shooting on Te Ngae Road which occurred at about 1pm.

'I was second on the scene,” says Graeme. 'There was a nurse, then I was the first paramedic, and a couple of doctors came over from the Te Ngae Medical Centre.”

Graeme thinks the man, who he describes as clean shaven and appeared to be aged in his 30s, will live.

'I would say he's stable, a lot of pain, but stable.”

Graeme currently works at Kawerau-based Emergency Medical Care, which was previously known as E.M.C Ambulance.

He had been driving a marked vehicle at the time and was asked to attend to the victim by police.

In a media statement, police say the man has now been transported to hospital after receiving initial first aid at the scene, but did not confirm the status or extent of his injuries.

Officers continue to remain at the Te Ngae Road location where the man was shot, and are advising motorists they are now allowed to travel through the area but should still expect some delays.

There;s a BIG question here:

If, as Police have stated several times with recent shootings, they are acting "according to their training", are the AOS being trained to "shoot to kill'? Meaning shoot in head or torso, rather than arms and legs? From what has been reported recently, they haven't been aiming for limbs, have they? And THAT is rather scarey, if this IS indeed what they are being trained to do! Has AOS been given a licence to "shoot first, ask questions later", which is a paramilitary response, not a Police response. If so - when, exactly, did this occur, and when did this override the rights of any individual in New Zealand to a fair trial?

out of control, cops obviously need more and better training

ONE shot to the gut would stop any man, WHY TWO? Three shootings in two weeks? Way way over the top. NEW REGIME? Police recently announced "new priorities, new attitude, new culture" and their union rep is saying they should all be armed all the time...yeah right, they can't get it right when they have to get the gun out of the trunk of the car...let alone if they only had to grab it from a holster.... The numbers don't stack up, just like the crashed cars after police chases ..every time it happens the police "just stopped chasing a minute before the crash" I call bulls..t alert. Lets see the excuses this time.

Get real - support Police

There would be no shootings if these idiots behaved themselves...full stop! Why is it that some do-gooders can't see this? Life is full of choices... Present a firearm, threaten someone with a weapon etc... Expect consequences! Well done to the Police! ????????

in their shoes

now how hard would it be to shoot someone that is moving, holding a weapon and hit them in the arm or leg. not that easy i presume. put yourself in that situation, could you do it, or even pull the trigger. what if that was your loved one in danger or worse killed and police had opportunity to shoot and didn't or tried to hit a small moving target like limbs. different story then i bet. this all happens in split seconds not slow mo like the movies

All these comments quick to condem the police make me angry. I bet they wouldn't hesitate to call the police if they needed them, and complain if a loved one was hurt or killed because the police didn't shoot the B******. No pleasing some people.

The police did their prime job

The job of the police is to protect innocent members of the community from harm. It is good that they actually swiftly. This neutralised the potential risk to other members of the public. I wonder how long though before we hear things like gentle family man, wouldn't hurt a fly, salt of the earth and all the other stuff that usually accompanies shootings.

It will not be too long, and he was a good boy as well.
