A campaign is underway to save the four month old pitbull puppy confiscated by the Tauranga City Council after a 52 year old woman was allegedly attacked by it.
The woman was allegedly attacked by her 54 year old sister and the dog at the weekend.
The 15kg accused puppy.
Tauranga man Marcus de Thierry, who knows the sisters, believes the young dog is being unfairly blamed.
He says the sisters were drinking alcohol at a Welcome Bay house early Saturday morning when the alleged assault occurred.
Marcus believes the dog can only be responsible for about 20 per cent of the woman's injuries.
He is critical of newspapers and websites which are portraying the puppy as the main attacker.
'It's a pretty simple case of misusing alcohol,” says Marcus.
'I think it's horrific they are trying to blame the dog.”
Tauranga City Council's animal services department is holding the dog on behalf of the police.
Team leader Brent Lincoln says the dog will not be destroyed immediately.
'If the police decide to prosecute in relation to the dog, we will hold it pending the court case.”
He says it will be automatically destroyed if there is a conviction, unless special circumstances are considered.
Marcus is campaigning to save the dog, and wants to have ownership of it.
He describes the puppy as a 'nice natured” dog that was protecting its owner.
'He's a poor four month old pup that just was just trying to save his own mum in his own home.”

Good luck Marcus!!!
All pitbulls should be put down no questions!

They are skitso and can snap anytime! I remember a unfortunate incident around 1995 when a person had owned 2 for several years, took them for a walk on his farm one afternoon, they snapped and he died of his injuries. Can you explain that one Marcus?

Its rarely the dog's fault. Many people dont have a clue how to behave with animals or around animals and the dog gets the blame for doing what he thinks is expected of him.
Poor Puppy

If you ask me it should be the owner that gets "put down", its because of people like this that some dog breeds get a bad name...maybe people might realise that in most cases a dog will not attack unless it has been brought up this way...yes in some circumstances, dogs that attck should be put down, but not in this case....you go Marcus, i hope you can save this little innocent puppy and give him a nice peacefull, happy life.

why do these types want to own an aggressive animal like this is beyond me. - perhaps it is to reflect their own personality ? these dogs have no place in our society. - read the statistics from america on the number of attacks each day by this breed - it is chilling.
Hard to believe
Posted on 25-05-2011 19:20 | By Damo
It is hard to believe this little thing could inflict the injuries the victim sustained. I think this needs to be seriously looked into before the animal is destroyed. Pitbull or not, come on seriously!? It sounds like and looks like the owner had a good go too. Good one Marcus for speaking out!

@ justice - Marcus does not need to explain anything to you. He doesn't appear to me to be an advocate for the Pitbull breed but an advocate for this particular pup. It is obvious this breed of dog has earned it's reputation for been aggressive but doesn't mean every Pitbull is vicious from birth. I think it comes down to the owners and from what I can read into this there is more to it than another senseless attack by a vicious puppy Pittbull.
BAN THEM
Posted on 25-05-2011 21:13 | By Colleen Spiro
So the sister SCALPED the sister - I also know the owner and I know she would NOT teach this dog to be vicious. It is inherent in the breed.... GET RID OF THEM. It is usually the wrong people who own them. WE NEED TO BAN THESE ANIMALS LIKE THEY HAVE IN AUSTRALIA. How many more children need to be mauled, owners killed, pets killed, stock mauled and left for dead. Why cant we walk in our streets and parks in safety.

do you people really think a 15kg puppy is capable of this "so called brutality". Look at the injuries of the woman, 2 black eyes, how does a dog give somebody 2 black eyes....this is a verylarge woman, are you saying she couldnt pull the 15kg, 4 month old puppy off her?
Know your dogs

As an experienced dog handler I see two issues here, one is the nature of the dog and the other is the nature of the owner. Quite why people insist on these breeds is beyond me, its like having a live handgrenade for a pet, why risk it? But these breeds are often favoured by less intelligent people so no suprises there. At 4 months of age a cute little puppy can chew up your slippers and is capapble of inflicting severe damage on anything, humans included. Anyone who says otherwise is misinformed. This dog has crossed the line of acceptable behaviour and cannot be defended. It, like its owner, will pose an uacceptable risk to safety in the future, it should be put down. As for the owner, she's needs to go to rehab.
Pitbull ownership like Russian roulette

I don't believe we can take a risk when it comes to dog dangers. I don't know anything about this case so I'm speaking generally. The way dogs are raised has a lot to do with their behaviour, same as kids really. Perhaps the owners of dangerous dogs should get the punishment?

OPEN YOUR EYES ITS NOT THE BREED
Posted on 26-05-2011 10:45 | By sammik
I think its rediculas that anyone can blame a pitbull for all the attacks.. its NOT the breed its how they are raised, huskys, japanese akitas etc are all breed to hunt an kill yet you never see them all over the news cause they get the right owners, look at the owners of these dogs! Any dog will protect their owner in their home, its a natural instinct for a dog an anyone that disagrees is just plain stupid! i have owned pitbulls an none of them have ever attacked or harmed anyone, i take them tto preschools an have kids pulling their tails an ears etc an tey just sit there an put up with it or walk away when they have had enough. You are more likely to be bitten by a chihuahua then a pitbull, im a dog groomer an all my scars have been from them little dogs, they are more aggressive then pitbuls, i have worked with pitbulls that have been beaten all their lives, all they want is a loving owner, they dont choose to have a owner that teaches them to fight an be aggressive do they?? When i was younger i had a Labrador, i was play fighting with a friend an my lab ended up nipping my friend an growling at them because he was trying to protect me! a dog will protect its owner an its property!!!
wth?
Posted on 26-05-2011 11:27 | By monkey
Wow justice you are the dumbest dude ive ever heard. Why should all pitbulls be put down? If its in their nature to act this way, and you still decide to own one, then anything that happens to you or anyone else is YOUR FAULT! Would you own a lion? No, because they would tear you apart in a second. Its the same case here yet not so extreme. If you cant handle a dog like that, then dont get one, its as simple as that.
I don't think so

firstly the sister of the puppy needs to be put into the pound till the court case. Or perhaps she should be ordered to be at the SPCA 7 days a week at 6.30am and clean kennels. that way she may actually learn some appeciation for animals that share this earth with us humans. A four month old, 15kg puppy of any breed is not going to inflict this type of injury upon any person of this size. With the help of a human it may have been able to cause the woman to have to have a few stitches but the bruising on her face and arms would certainly only happen if she was sick and prone to pressure bruising and if that were the case why was she drinking alcohol...could that be a clue as to the behaviour of these two women....the most abused, legal and lethal drug of today? Good on you Marcus for speaking out
Its not the Breed, Its the owners

Any dog can turn on someone.. Just because its a so called dangerous breed (cause they have been used for fighting) doesnt mean it is dangerous.. Any dog can be dangerous its all in the up bringing.. people need to stop judging and be more proactive with teaching the dogs the correct behaviour.. good luck with saving this dog.. Looks like hes got Boxer in him.. could they then be classed as a dangerous animal???
Isn't it amazing...
Posted on 26-05-2011 13:47 | By bryceh
that when we can't explain something, we blame something, in this case the poor dog. Everyone seems to be an expert when it comes to reasons for these or any other breed of animal turns for no reason. If a kid turns for no reason, do we put them down? No we look to the parents to see what would have caused the issue. Even now when sharks attack humans in the sharks environment, it is only the idiots who believe killing the shark is the best option. We need to address the people who own these dogs, and in my opinion it should be the owner who is licensed, not the animal. Owners of guns need a permit, owners of non-standard cars need a permit, who don't owners of dangerous dogs, need a permit to prove that at least somewhat intelligent enough to care for the animal?!
Debate reality.
Posted on 26-05-2011 14:49 | By Murray.Guy
Sammik says, "You are more likely to be bitten by a chihuahua then a pitbull, im a dog groomer an all my scars have been from them little dogs, they are more aggressive then pitbuls,..." I ask, "how many chihuahua's have killed and maimed people?" Remove emotion and debate with reason. It is the outcome of an attack that is our focus. A poodle and a pitbull chooses to walk up to you and begin piddling on your leg. You will shake the poodle off, you will let the pitbull finish!

I would take this dog, no bad dogs only bad owners. I had a pittie cross for almost 15 years, she never hurt a soul! take care of your dogs and train them well! only dog bite I ever had was from a chihuahua! still got the scar.
Pitbulls
Posted on 26-05-2011 16:44 | By Glen Clova
We all know its not the dog`s fault but unless you license the owners and make them responsible for the dogs then you will keep having incidents like this. I personally would ban all breeds like.I feel that people who own these types of dogs have a problem. If the dogs are not to be banned then they should be on a lead and muzzled at all times.Any found without a collar or on the loose should be put down.
MY STORY
Posted on 26-05-2011 17:58 | By ataahua79
Regarding Marcus' comments. The puppy was NOT responsible for any percentage of the injuries. The puppy was NOT involved fullstop. The pup was NOT protecting me, I was protecting myself from the attacker. The media has been listening to a woman who is fully involved in the BDSM scene who attacked me. Nobody has come to ask me my side of the story. PHILLIPA BAYLEY
I Say Again.....

Give the poor dog to new owners who will train it properly and give it love. To the "sisters" involved? STOP DRINKING ALCOHOL!!!!!
2 sides to a story
Posted on 26-05-2011 22:33 | By becky1980
I believe that both sides should be listened to and not just the one. Media has always done that, and probably always will. Truth should come out in court though. I hope the poor little puppy will be saved.

Then you deserve what could easily happen....but your child will be the one to live(hopefully)with your pathetic innocence. We have a large one next door.It isnt pretty to watch.

I was 16 puting a electric fence on roadside to graze cows. three english sheep dogs came running down drive over road toward me they were going nuts.I had one steel fence standard left in my hand. they tore across road at me and the leader leapt at me just as I let rip with the standard and smashed it arcoss its back bone just before its ivory reached my face.It winged and wined its way back across road with tail between its legs and back up its driveway closely followed by the other two dogs yelping all the way home. I was never bothered by those dogs again.bloody mongrels. I have since owned many dogs but I never ever sic them onto anything or anyone. In fact I believe many dogs have better personalities then some of the humans I've met !
go marcus!!

its not the dogs fault!!! not all pitbulls are bad. yes most of them do snap but so would you if u were beaten, had your ears cut and treated badly!! you buy a guard dog its going to guard!!!! some people are so stupid!!!! possable some people should be put to sleep???
Really????
Posted on 29-05-2011 16:55 | By Donnaw
"notalimpliberal" maybe people should be teaching the kids about "dog awareness" and watching their kids, to make sure they DONT stick their hands through to other peoples property? we have dogs and we have this propblem all the time, although we have a huge fence and signs, kids still freaking stick there hands under the gate....i think it should be a parents responsibilty to "train" their kids....dont you?
Judgemental
Posted on 15-06-2011 16:43 | By XandirsMummy
People can be so judgemental about dogs they clearly know nothing about. There seems to be so many people on here wanting to kill the poor pup & any of it's breed they obviously have never had one of these wonderful dogs. I mean cummon I've come across scarier foxys that pittys. I've owned a few different dogs & my pitbul has to be my most cuddly gentle 1 yet. All I'm saying is get to know the dog before you judge, no 2 dogs are alike no matter what breed they are!

Where did I read that I am supposed to know Marcus. Well I don't. The pitbul was not gaurding his owner. He was joining an attack. It is true the dog did not do all the injuries. Never once did I say that was the situation. Yes we had had a few drinks, but not bombed out of our minds as some suggest. Though do know sister was full of prescription drugs to boot. Some here say how could I not defend myself on a 15 kg pup. Blood is like an oil slick. With one big woman sitting on me pounding my face while the dog ripped at me non stop. Is no chance for defence. Just because she has had no offence with dogs in the past, due to dogs being in her sons name, does not mean she is free of any past wrong doings. Her dogs are extremely aggressive.

Do like your post. Just wanted to say here in defence, that bdsm was mentioned above. Not denying I have peeped at the scene, mostly to be better informed on the subject. What on earth was that mentioned for other than to put me down. That is total rubbish, "being heavily in the scene'. I think someone pops too many pills with alcohol and drugs. That's what I think the problem is.
