Flames and smoke were seen billowing from a car as firefighters worked to put the blaze out in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The Omokoroa Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to the car fire on Wainui South Road around 4.15pm.

A Northern Fire Communications spokesperson says the vehicle was 'well involved” when firefighters arrived at the scene.

'The owner is arranging to have the car towed. We were there for about 30 minutes.”

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
