Tae kwon do grudge match

Warren Steiner is being dragged back into the ring this weekend to settle a grudge match, but it's not his grudge.

Warren's held the men's open national title six times. The last national title was decided in the eighth round on a golden point – the first one to score.

See video below of Warren Steiner talking about fighting for his seventh national title.

Warrren won, and retired at age 35.

But since then the loser has been calling him out at tae kwon do events, but Warren had moved on.

He eventually heard about the 20 year old's repeated challenges and replied.

'Tae kwon do is a young man's game,” says Warren.

'That's why I love MMA (mixed martial arts) – you can take your time, pick your moves and do what you have to do.”

He's been MMA or cage fighting since retiring from Tae kwon do.

MMA is a full contact style that allows a variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a range of combat sports, to be used in competition.

Tae kwan do bouts are more restricted in the allowable moves and strikes and the participants wear head gear, body armour and shin pads.

Warren's been training for a month to re-accustom himself to the tae kwon do style.

Whether Warren or Kano Thompson will be in the final will be determined in the ring tomorrow at the QE2 Youth Centre at Memorial Park.

There are four fighters in the group, and both fighters will have to win their first bouts to make the final.

'He's just coming all this way from Samoa to prove a point,” says Warren.

'I have convinced myself that I'm the underdog, it takes a bit of stress off me. I'm not that nervous actually. Tomorrow might be different.”
