One of the best sized crowed to watch the McDonalds Super Smash this season was on hand at the Bay Oval at Mount Maunganui on Sunday, to witness the clash between the Knights and the Otago Volts.

Knights captain Dean Brownlie won the toss and elected to bat on a beautiful Western Bay of Plenty afternoon.

The Northern Districts side had seven current or former Black Caps in their ranks in the Mount Maunganui game, with current Black Cap quick's in Trent Boult and Tim Southee, promising plenty of action with the ball.

The first Knights wicket fell after just 12 runs were on the board, before Tim Seifert took up the challenge to smash his team's top score of 41 off 31 balls, which include two big shots over the picket fence.

Western Bay resident Corey Anderson made a circumspect start, batting at four, before belting five 4's in his 39 off 30 balls.

A real highlight of the Bay Oval match was the Anaru Kitchen leaping in the air catch on the boundary to dismiss Tim Seifert.

The Otago bowlers bowled well at the death to restrict the Knights to 157/7, which didn't look to be enough runs for a home team win.

Black Cap captain Kane Williamson, who was enjoying an afternoon of cricket watching, quickly attracted a large crowd of cricket mad youngsters.

The popular Black Cap skipper was kept busy signing a variety of bats, balls, shirts and hats for an appreciative audience.

The Volts got away to a flyer getting to 51, before Anaru Kitchen had his stumps shattered from a ball from Scott Kuggeleijn.

The Knights looked to have some chance, when Hamish Rutherford was caught by Kuggelijn off a Trent Boult delivery for 30.

However, recently recalled Black Cap Neil Broom (54no) and Mark Bracewell (41no) took the Otago Volts to victory, with a sterling partnership, in the 17th over.

The McDonalds Super Smash returns to the Bay Oval during the holiday period when the Knights taking on the Auckland Aces on December 27, before meeting the Canterbury Kings on Thursday, December 29.
