Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash in Te Puke.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says a campervan and cyclist appear to have crashed at the Jellicoe and Jocelyn streets roundabout.

The caller says one lane is blocked and it looks quite serious.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing senior sergeant Ian Campion says a police unit and ambulance staff are currently at the scene.

'A cyclist and a campervan have collided on Jellicoe Street at the intersection with Jocelyn. The cyclist has suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision.

'At this stage the road is blocked and there will be some delay for motorists travelling in the area.”

Several more police units have been dispatched to the scene, he adds.

Motorists are being advised to expect delays or avoid the scene if possible.

With the disruption to the smooth flow of traffic through Te Puke, WBOPDC have now caused the first serious accident in Te Puke for many years.Against the wishes of a substantial number of residents and retailers alike, WBOPDC have insisted on road works to disrupt the traffic, continuing. It won't be until April before they will consider reversing this damage. As townspeople have been heard to say - if it wasn't broke, why fix it!
