UPDATE 3.30pm: One person has died following four people being swept down the Waikato River near Taupo earlier today.

The three other people involved are safe and well and Victim Support services are being provided.

Police are now in the process of contacting next-of-kin.

The Police Dive Squad will be deployed to assist in recovering the deceased.

EARLIER 2pm: Emergency services are currently responding to reports of up to four people being carried down Waikato River near Aratiatia Dam/Aratiatia Rapids, north of Taupo.

Police were notified at 12.10pm, and Police, a helicopter, ambulances, and search and rescue teams have responded.

A Police media statement says further details will be released once they become available.
