A small hatchback car was destroyed by fire on 21st Ave in Tauranga, overnight.

Northern communications centre shift manager Megan Ruru says appliances from the Greerton station were dispatched to the vehicle fire in Gate Pa shortly after 9.38pm.

'When they arrived at the scene they found the vehicle well alight. We notified police who were on hand as the Greerton fire fighters extinguished the fire.”

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline this morning says she discovered the burned out vehicle, a Nissan March, while driving to work this morning.

'It was a bit freaky driving past and seeing the car, it's completely destroyed, all the windows had been punched out. It's doesn't look good.”
