Overturned boat a mystery

A boat found overturned in near Mayor Island has left more questions than answers as police hunt for the owner.

A light aircraft flying spotted the 5-6m boat floating upside down 2.5 nautical miles south of Mayor Island yesterday.

Police were notified, along with Coastguard, and a search of the area was carried out.

The Tauranga-based Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called in to help with an aerial search, while Coastguard conducted a search on the water.

'The Rescue helicopter and Waihi Coastguard responded and carried out an extensive search of the area in which the boat was found,” says a spokesperson for the rescue chopper. 'No one was found.”

Meanwhile, police are seeking information to try and locate the owner of the boat recovered yesterday afternoon.

The boat is a 5.6m fibreglass Sea Nymph with the name Optimist.

The boat has a 150hp Mercury outboard with it.
