UPDATED 4.40PM: The Western Bay of Plenty District Council confirms a slip south of Bramley Drive in Omokoroa occurred this afternoon.
A district council spokesperson says the slip appears to be about five houses wide – about 70 metres – but at this stage was unable to confirm the extent of any damage caused.
'We have expert staff there now speaking to residents and assessing the situation. There is a lot of vegetation and we don't believe any houses are in danger, but need to take a proper look.
'If needed we'll get hold of a geotechnical engineer as the next step.”
EARLIER:
An unconfirmed report has come in of a major slip that's threatening several properties in Omokoroa.
A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says up to four properties situated on Bramley Drive are potentially at risk of being damaged by the slip, caused by today's nasty weather.
SunLive has contacted the Western Bay of Plenty District Council for confirmation and is waiting for its response.
If confirmed to be true, it won't be the first time Bramley Drive locals have been affected by a massive landslide. In 2011, a large chunk of land estimated at the time to have been about 30 metres high and 200 metres wide came down following torrential rain in the area.
