Power is out to homes in Te Puke and Tauranga as ex-cyclone Cook bears down on the Bay of Plenty.

Homes in Welcome Bay, Te Puke, Te Puna and Paengaroa have been affected by the outage.

The Welcome Bay power outage is believed to have been caused by a crash on Welcome Bay Road.

Powerco is unsure when it will have the supply back on and says strong winds are to be blamed for the outages.

Meanwhile, police are responding to reports of a slip on SH29, just after the turn-off to Cameron Road.

There is also flooding on Takitimu Drive, from Elizabeth Street right though to the Route K Toll Road.

People who have to travel are being warned to drive with extreme care as there are reports of trees down and other debris on the roads.

The fire service is also dealing with a number of calls around the region.
