Aiming high to ‘run on sunshine'

Yotam and Niva Kay are already gardening organically, but now they want their small enterprise Pakaraka Permaculture Organic Market Garden near Thames to 'run on sunshine” and have turned to cloud funding for help.

'We want to be a market garden of the future. Already we grow over 8000kg of organic produce a season, without using any tractors or heavy machinery, and all that on a quarter acre of land. But we want to be even more sustainable. We want to be running on sunshine,” explains Yotam.

'We are passionate about sustainable living and about a revolution in food production, making it better for people, local economy and the environment. Pakaraka Permaculture is seeking $20,000 on PledgeMe to purchase a solar system that will run our cool room and electric delivery car.

'A cool room allows us to keep our produce at a premium quality, and eliminate waste. We want to do this without fossil fuels which are causing climate change so we have chosen clean, renewable solar energy.

'By charging an electric delivery car, our vegetables will be delivered in the same way that they are grown – with care for the earth, sunshine and love.”

So far the couple have received support from more than 100 individual pledgers, and more than 10 companies including Front End Solar, Plug N Drive the electric car supplier, Little Bird Organics, Agrissentials, Go Green Expo Auckland, Thunderpants, Ecostore and more.

Yotam and Niva have a tiered donation system which offers rewards in the form of gifts or attendance at events or seminars and just days into the fund raiser had received more than $9,000 in pledges.

The couple joined Pakaraka Farm in 2014 and established Pakaraka Permaculture market garden as their family project, with the desire to feed the community with the best food they could grow.

Yotam, who holds a Diploma in Permaculture Design, loves growing things and sharing his passion for it. He has been living and teaching permaculture since 2005 and has worked on a wide range of projects including leading community garden projects, establishing food gardens and sustainability programmes in schools, to managing organic commercial gardens in New Zealand.

While Niva studied interdisciplinary environmental studies and continued into permaculture design. She's had many hands-on experiences around the globe, growing, building and creating while searching for practical sustainable solutions to global environmental crises.
