Swimmers are being warned to stay out of the water due to strong rips creating treacherous conditions at Mount Maunganui's Main beach today.

According to MetService, swells along the Western Bay of Plenty coastline are 1.6 metres at Waihi Beach, 1.7m at Matakana Island, 1.6m at Tay Street, 1.3m at Maketu and 1.6m at Pukehina Beach.

At Mount Maunganui, a low tide of 0.3m is expected at about 11.56am, with a forecasted high tide of 1.9m at 6.14pm.

General manager Glenn Bradley says it's the second day in a row the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service have put up on the signs on Main Beach.

'There's quite large surf, a lot of water is moving around and there's no lifeguards on duty, so we just want to raise people's awareness to the dangers.

'In line with what we saw on Monday, and the tide's going to start to go out soon, we expect it to drift that north to south direction again pretty strongly today.

Glenn says there's also a pretty strong rip running around Moturiki / Leisure Island, 'but that one's there pretty much all the time”.
