Body reported in Whakatane water

UPDATED 3.15pm: Police Search and Rescue, and Coastguard, are in attendance at the Whakatane River, responding to a report just before midday of a person in the water near the Peketahi Bridge.

Searches are being made on water and on land. Police have spoken with a number of people as further inquiries continue.

An update will be provided when available.

Earlier:

Emergency services are dealing with reports of a body in the water in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

A police spokesperson says police are in attendance in the Pekatahi bridge area after reports of someone going into the water.

"Search and Rescue has been advised, but I have no further details."

Coastguard are reported to have launched one of their smaller vessels up the Whakatane River and a rescue helicopter has been called to help assist with the search.
