No fair share of the cake here

Re: Social equality versus greed in society' (The Weekend Sun, April 28).

I think B Johnson is misleading us with his claim that Maori want more than a fair share of the national cake. Maori have received about $3 billion in Treaty settlements for more than $30 billion of land wrongly taken, with no allowance made for lost income. This can be confirmed with the Office of Treaty Settlements website. Fair compensation would have returned far more than $30 billion to Maori for stolen land.

It is the greed of Pakeha voters that stops Governments paying full compensation to Maori, even though, by passing the Treaty of Waitangi Act, Parliament admits that Maori land was stolen. By gracefully accepting less than 10 per cent compensation for the loss of ancestral land Maori are absolutely not greedy. B Johnson should explain why he thinks Maori should have to accept different compensation rules from everybody else when he campaigns for equality for all.

I have asked on many occasions where you get your $30 billion from, without reply. Alaska was purchased in 1867 from Russia for $7.2m. Confiscated lands would have been worth far less. This is nothing to do with greedy Pakeha, its to do with our taxes being paid to compensate someone for something we didnt do and benefits given to people who are multiple generations removed from the people that suffered injustice (or perceived injustice). Its greedy politicians selling their souls to stay in power by accommodating minority parties who seem happy to amend NZ historys ambiguity to extort the public. The Treaty was signed between Maori Tribes and the English, shouldnt the treaty be argued with England. I would love to know what you and Robin really want to see happen, because history shows any society that had a privileged minority ended in disaster, for that minority.
