Fed up with flooding

This is what one Bellevue family woke up to on Saturday morning. Supplied photos.

Residents in Bellevue are frustrated after heavy rain flooded their properties yet again.

A downpour early on Saturday morning brought water almost a metre high into the home of David and Fiona Brown.

Fiona says it's the second time they've experience flooding at the Sherwood Street address, which backs onto Mitchell Park.

'Apparently the house has also flooded before we bought it, back in 2005,” she says. 'There are about four houses in the street that get flooded when we have bad weather like this.”

The problem is the park's stormwater drain – it's too small and is easily blocked, something council contractors noted when they came out to investigate the problem previously.

But even though the issue has been identified, Fiona has been told it will take a while to fix.

'Last time the council came out, they said we were on a long waiting list behind Matua, the Mount industrial area, Greerton, and Maleme Street.

'We just need a bigger pipe, but to the council it's a small issue they're not worried about.”

Neighbour Lynne Meyers agrees something needs to be done.

'We are so over this. When is the council going to fix it?”

She contacted the council about the blocked drain, but received no response. In the end, one of her sons had to put on a wetsuit and go and clear it himself.

'The council did drop off sandbags yesterday, which I'm grateful for,” says Lynne. 'But this happened four years ago as well. Once, I can understand, but twice – no way. It's not fair to my kids.”

Now, she's looking at moving as a result, plus all the costs that go with that.

In the meantime, all Lynne and her neighbours can hope for is the rest of the city getting their flooding issues sorted quick smart. Then maybe the council will take a look at Mitchell Park.

The height of the now-receded floodwaters can be seen on the fence.

councilors and their contractors do not care as in most cases ive been saying since 1995 the drains need clearing on a daily basis, its that simple but the people you voted in this is what you get

They could have UNBLOCKED DRAIN when they dropped off sandbags,(DAH) thats RIGHT you need a BRAIN, how terrible and to be told its not as needy as other jobs, this is DISGRACFUL TCC,thats right you DO NOT CARE,they may send out a BRAINLESS (CON)sultant to have look and say its BLOCKED and have a look again next year,Thankyou, thats $300 For TCC for CONS,.fees. this is terrible for Fiona and David, (BET) TCC would send you a letter to say that you have not paid your rates.you may have a (chance for COMPO) for this as you have already REPORTED IT and NOTHING DONE.Hope this is settled for you, (BUT) they will have excuses,ALL the drain GRATES need to be CHECKED weekly,Hang on you may have to get someone with a BRAIN to do this, GOSH,Sunlive Thankyou, my thoughts only, 10-4.

It would have been put right if the property was owned by a councilor!

Why are we paying (ever increasing) rates???

I feel for you guys. We were renting this house & got caught in the flooding that occurred in 2005. We were told THEN by TCC they had a 10yr plan, where work would be done to replace the small pipe in Mitchell Park with a larger one after the work in Matua & those other areas was completed. About a year later we were advised by TCC the '10 year plan' was being scrapped. So no larger pipe. We moved when we bought a house in 2010. And have heard from the neighbours that the house has flooded repeatedly since. Because the pipe is still too small. So I ask again - why the increasing rates if existing problems aren't being fixed?? The lack of TCC action may not only jeopardise lives but also these people's ability to continue their insurance cover. So fix it!!

Unbelievable!

Issues everywhere in Tauranga on Saturday after the rain. The car park at bay wave was a lake. Those poor residents as well. Simply unacceptable TCC. They keep allowing permits to grow Tauranga but the basics are not being maintained or altered. Sort it out please.
