Bringing the Cup to The Strand

Tauranga fans of the America’s Cup can watch the races live on the waterfront from June 25. File photo.

A free live screening of the America's Cup will be held for fans at the Tauranga waterfront from Sunday, June 25, until the cup is won.

It will be an opportunity to bring the family down and cheer on Tauranga's local boy Peter Burling and Emirates Team New Zealand, as they strive to bring home the Auld Mug.

Residents and visitors are invited to join the public viewing and watch Emirates Team New Zealand challenging cup holders Oracle Team USA in Bermuda. The live broadcast will begin at 4.45am with the races kicking off at 5am, followed by the replay at 6.30am – all on the big screen.

Hot drinks and small snacks will be available from George Café at the waterfront. The Tauranga waterfront is an alcohol-free zone, but people are welcome to bring their own breakfast. Access to the fanzone will be free – although people are advised to bring a blanket, chair and wrap themselves up warmly.

All parking is free on Sundays. Both parking buildings (Elizabeth Street and Spring Street) will be open 24/7 and visitors can also park for free on off-street and on-street car parks.

Tauranga's city centre, including the waterfront, is a 24/7 alcohol-free and glass-free zone.

The event is weather permitting, so keep an eye on www.facebook.com/TaurangaCityCouncil for any updates.

more spending

Posted on 21-06-2017 11:50 | By Captain Sensible

TCC now feel they have to spend someone else's money on showing a boat race from the other side of the world. Yes, there will be interest, but is it the responsibility of the ever suffering ratepayers to pay for this? By the Facebook reference, it seems the answer is 'yes'. The Mayor's pre-election promise on reigning in spending, is once again crashed and burning on the roadside.

Maybe...

One or more of our TCC Partners will cough and pick up the tab Captain.Or is it being done by Bay Venues and will incur a charge to TCC .(Read Ratepayers)?

I wonder

how many people will turn up there. Its a nice idea. However its not like the early opening of bars along the Strand that sold liquor and food during the Rugby World Cup. Its a wee bit early for me so will watch Prime at 6.30.Go Team NZ.

Brilliant

Nothing is FREE

Somebody will be paying SKY TV, for the right to provide the "free" screening. From the item, it appears that the TCC (one way or the other) is picking up the tab. Sorry, I got that wrong - the RATEPAYERS are picking up the tab. Given that the America's Cup races are available on delayed FREE TO AIR, via PRIME, I see no reason whatsoever for the TCC to spend RATEPAYER money to show it at an OUTDOOR venue, one hour before the free to air showing.
