Tauranga City council has closed the Mauao base track this afternoon, citing public safety because of big waves in the harbour entrance.
The harbour is currently experiencing wave heights of up to 6.6 metres, which are expected to continue to rise until high tide at about 5:30pm, says a council statement.
The waves as reported are of sufficient size to break across the base track and risk the safety of users.
All other tracks remain open. Council will reassess the closure tomorrow morning.
At 4pm the Port of Tauranga's A Beacon was recording a maximum wave height of 4.9m in an easterly wind gusting to 31knots (57.4km/h)
