What’s On? Protests & Politics

Good morning, and welcome to another midwinter Sunday with SunLive.

The bitter cold of the past few days seems to have broken, although last night was still a chilly one.

But it's looking warmer for the week ahead, and today we have plenty of events on to keep you entertained and get you out and about.

First of all, though, it's important to note for those travelling along State Highway 2 through Te Puna-Bethlehem today that a protest will cause traffic disruption for a time.

Some local Maori are upset that Maori from the Hauraki district may get special rights to the Tauranga Harbour under a Waitangi Tribunal settlement. These local iwi wish to be the only Maori with special rights to Tauranga Harbour, and so are walking across the Wairoa Bridge this morning to make motorists aware of their grievances.

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson says stop/go traffic management is expected to be in place for around 30 minutes between 10am and 11am to allow the protestors to cross the bridge.

An alternative route is available to motorists via Wairoa Road to Poripori Road, which connects to State Highway 29.

Later this afternoon, Labour candidate for Tauranga Jan Tinetti will be hosting her first public meeting on housing at Merivale Primary School. Labour MP Jenny Salesa will also be there to talk about her experience of dealing wth the housing crisis in her electorate of Manukau East. The meeting beings at 4pm.

Finally, for a bit of entertainment, don't miss the Tauranga Festival of Performing Arts grand concert at 2pm at Baycourt. A selection of the festival's finest young performers will take to the stage in a high-qaulity variety show of singing, dancing, and drama. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children, from the box office.

How thoughtful of them

Why don't they keep their Maori politics on the Marae. Residents north of Bethlehem already fed up with traffic disruption and don't need this as well. Lost a lot of support from Tauranga by doing this. Not the brightest thing to do.
