There's nothing controversial about the eastern ward councillors appearance at the PEERS meeting in Papamoa East on Thursday night.
The 7.30pm meeting being hosted by the Papamoa East Emergency and Road Safety group at the Papamoa Sport and Rec centre is just an update for the community on subjects specifically relating to Papamoa East, says city councillor Leanne Brown.
The PEERS group just asked us to update the Papamoa East community on what's happening in their community, says Leanne.
With the other ward councillor Steve Morris, the eastern ward councillors are regular speakers at the Papamoa Progressive Association meetings where they keep that community updated on council goings on. They also speak at local probus club meetings says Leanne.
'We're hoping people aren't coming along for a controversial session,” says Leanne. 'It's really ‘this is what's happening…' 'We are covering all sorts of subjects; Te Okuroa Drive, the Papamoa East Interchange, Plan Change 25…”
They will also be addressing emergency warning systems, although there is nothing new there.
'It is coming to our committee, the Community and Culture Committee in August,” says Leanne.
'We'll just be letting them know there's some work been going on nationally which we will know about at the August committee meeting.
'Steve and I both go to Papamoa Progressive Association meetings every month and they regularly get 60-80 people. We are the guest speakers every second meeting.
'No other wards are doing it, we are quite unique really. I can go and speak at the local Probus club and similar kind of update on things that are happening in the area that they live in as well as general light hearted stuff about what's happening in council, and they just go away so empowered because they know exactly what's going on.
'So a lot of the community out there have already heard a lot of what we are talking about anyway. But we have been asked to stick to topics that relate to Papamoa East, so the likes of Opal Drive, Domain Road, we might be able to cover that - but different things happening in the rest of Papamoa we won't be able to cover that unless it comes up in the Q&A at the end.
'Hopefully we can get a good turnout and people will go away with correct information, rather than assumptions of what they think is happening.
Steve Morris encourages residents to go along, get updated and express their views.
'Papamoa East is a great suburb and is feeling the pressures of growth more than most. This is a chance for residents to learn what changes are in the pipeline and express their views so that we can take them to our colleagues at Council,” says Steve.
