Tauranga could soon hold the bragging rights for being the nations' most beautiful city, after being announced as a finalist in the Keep New Zealand Beautiful, Beautiful Awards.
The prestigious awards evening, which is run by Keep New Zealand Beautiful, celebrates people and communities who ‘Do the Right Thing' and demonstrate environmental excellence in all walks of life.
Mount Maunganui is also up for the title of Kiwi's Choice.
Organisers of the event say the calibre of entries for the 2017 awards has been very high, which has made judging extremely difficult.
'Keep New Zealand Beautiful would like to say a big thank you, first and foremost, to all of our judges.
'In particular we'd like to thank all of our award entrants for the time and effort that has been put in to submitting your entries.
'It is fantastic to see the amount of work that is going in to do the right thing, nationwide; long may it continue.”
Mayor Greg Brownless thinks the award is great recognition for the city.
'I think it's great, when you look around and see the general state of parks and reserves and you compare them to other cities across the country and overseas we do well.
'A lot of it comes down to the people who actually live here taking pride in the place they live, by taking pride in their gardens and streets.”

Green Lettuce?
Posted on 03-10-2017 13:21 | By MISS ADVENTURE
I wonder if the beautiful photos of the Mount, beaches and so on shows the piles of sea lettuce piled up on the beaches? it would only be fair to show the truth of it, not a photoshop fake made up creation. The punters will only be disappointed otherwise. Liek Lake Rotorua, that was teh cities sewerage pond for many years is now anoxic. Pretty photos do not show the true situation only a superficial glossy image.
Good article

Once we get all our cultural facilities up to scratch we will sweep New Zealand's floor. We have a significant geographic and meteorological advantage that has yet to be exploited. Good days ahead!

All the dirty smokers keep dropping their butts everywhere. Selfish, dirty muppets!

Yes, but that's a small detail in the general scheme of things. Smoking is thankfully on the way out, but will take a while to completely diminish. Not so much because it's "bad for you" but becoming more because it's "not cool" The first discourages the old smokers, and the second discourages the young smokers. We humans are strange critters alright - preoccupied with our image. My wife keeps reminding me not to look scruffy. That's because I'm so bloody old now I don't get hung up on image any more.
