Opotiki murder trial continues

The trial continues today at the Tauranga District Court.

Evidence relayed in court this week details the brutal end for Opotiki woman Marie Halick, who was killed late last year.

Robert Hohua, 36, is charged with her murder following an assault at an address in Wellington Street on November 22.

Marie died following a 20 minute beating in which Hohua punched, kicked and stomped her, with the sounds reverberating through the house and alerting neighbours, who called police.

Hohua has pleaded not guilty to murder, but admits killing her.

The jury trial on the murder charge is proceeding in the High Court at Tauranga, with Justice Anne Hinton presiding.

Over the past few days, the court has heard the evidence of medical examiners alongside key detectives related to the incident.

ESR forensic scientist Jason Barr described in detail the evidence he witnessed at the scene.

His evidence presented on Wednesday, describes visible blood stains found at the scene as well as blood discovered at the scene using Luminol, a chemical substance used to detect trace amounts of blood.

He indicates the kitchen, living room, bathroom and main bedroom as being key areas where the 20 minute assault may have taken place.

Following this medical examiner Dr Thambirajah Balachandra and Whakatane Detective Jon McKenzie also presented evidence to the court yesterday.

A verdict is yet to be heard and the trial continues today at the Tauranga District court.
