A man has died following a medical event during the Mitre 10 Mega Tauranga City to Surf event.

A St John ambulance spokesperson says the man died while running on the Mauao base track this morning.

The spokesperson believed the deceased was a competitor in today's City to Surf event.

Emergency services, including police and St John Paramedics, were at the base track around 12.20pm.

Fire and Emergency Northern Communications shift manager Scott Osmond says firefighters were assisting St John ambulance with a medical callout.

A woman at the City to Surf event told SunLive that a minutes silence was held for man during prizegiving this afternoon.

Police say the man died shortly after midday.

A spokesperson says enquiries are continuing to be made into the matter.
