A section of State Highway 33 closed for most of today due to a crash has reopened.

Both lanes of the Three Mile Hill section of the highway, south of Paengaroa, reopened to traffic just before 5.30pm.

The highway was shut down following a truck crash earlier this morning.

There were significant delays as motorists were required to take a detour via Old Coach Road.

The driver of the milk delivery truck involved in the crash was left pinned after his vehicle rolled between Rotorua and Tauranga.

Some of his cargo began to catch fire shortly after the crash at around 9am, but luckily good Samaritans rushed to his aid and extinguished the spot fires before they took off and became dangerous.
