What's On? TRYathlon

Sam Mitchell on the home straight of the Weet-Bix TRYathlon at Arataki Park last year.

Good morning, SunLive readers, and welcome to December.

Did you know December used to be the tenth month of the year?

Its name comes from the Latin word decem, meaning 'ten'.

Now that you're armed with today's useless fact, let's find out what's on.

Weatherwise, MetService is hedging its bets with predictions for possible showers and thunderstorms from late afternoon.

However, it's expected to stay warm, with a high of 23 degrees, so a beach trip may still be in order.

Today we have the Mount Maunganui Weet-Bix TRYathlon, which is on right now until 12.30pm at Arataki Park.

The age-appropriate course includes a 50-150m swim at Baywave, a 4-8km cycle around the streets surrounding the park and a 1.5km run.

All participants receive a medal at the finish line and ambassadors handing out medals this year include Tauranga Olympic canoe slalom silver medallist Luuka Jones and retired New Zealand heptathlete and high jump champion Sarah Cowley-Ross.

Elsewhere, the final day of the DHL International Surf Rescue Challenge continues today from 8.30am.

International teams will be competing on Mount Maunganui's beach to see which nation is the best, so get down there and support the Black Fins.

Or, you could just check out what else is on below:
