Rain warning in place for Coromandel

A heavy rain warning is in place for the Coromandel Peninsula this afternoon.

The MetService is forecasting heavy rain for Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula and northern parts of Taranaki.

An active front lies slow-moving over the North Island, bringing rain with heavy falls to northern and western parts.

"Heavy rain has now eased in Westland, Nelson and northern Marlborough and the Warnings are lifted. Heavy rain is also expected in Northland, Auckland, and north Taranaki where a further 100 to 150mm is likely in addition to what has already fallen," says the weather organisation.

"A Heavy Rain Warning is now in force for Coromandel Peninsula where up 130mm may accumulate until mid-morning Friday.

Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.

Area: Northland, especially north of Kaikohe
Valid: 27 hours from 9am Thursday to 12pm Friday
Forecast: Periods of heavy northerly rain. Expect a further 110 to 130mm of rain from about Kaikohe northwards, with 40 to 70mm further south, in addition to what has already fallen. Peak intensities of 15 to 25mm/hr. However, there is a risk of localised downpours with rainfall intensities of 25 to 40mm/hr.
Changes: Added risk of downpours.

Area: Auckland
Valid: 21 hours from 9am Thursday to 6am Friday
Forecast: Periods of heavy northerly rain. Expect a further 80 to 100mm of rain, in addition to what has already fallen. Peak intensities of 15 to 25mm/hr. However, there is a risk of localised downpours with rainfall intensities of 25 to 40mm/hr.
Changes: Added risk of downpours.

Area: Coromandel Peninsula
Valid: 24 hours from 9am Thursday to 9am Friday
Forecast: Periods of heavy northerly rain. Expect 100 to 130mm of rain, mainly about the ranges. Peak intensities of 15 to 25mm/hr. However, there is a risk of localised downpours with rainfall intensities of 25 to 40mm/hr.
Changes: Added risk of downpours.

Area: Taranaki, about and north of Eltham
Valid: 15 hours from 9am Thursday to 12am Friday
Forecast: Periods of heavy northerly rain. Expect a further 100 to 150mm about Mount Taranaki, with 60 to 90mm about and north of Eltham, in addition to what has already fallen. Peak intensities of 15 to 25mm/hr, about Mount Taranaki.
