Day starts with fire and crash

UPDATED 9.09AM: A motorcyclist has sustained moderate injuries after a crash near Paengaroa this morning.

A police media spokesperson says the crash happened just before 8am.

'This was a crash between a car and motorbike near the intersection of Wilson Road North and State Highway 2.

'The rider was reportedly status three, in a moderate condition, and left with ambulance.

'It appears a tow may have been called for the motorbike and that there may have been a bit of debris on the road.”

Meanwhile another incident on the Lower Kaimai around the same time, caused morning drama for one commuter, after his engine caught on fire.

A reporter at the scene says the man was coming down the hill from Cambridge when he noticed smoke coming from his engine.

'He pulled over and when he opened his bonnet there were flames coming out. Nobody knows why it happened.”

The incident happened about one kilometre from Soldiers Road on SH29.

'No one was injured and they're currently seated on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.”

Reports are coming in of a car fire on State Highway 29.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says they saw a truck on fire on SH29, newar Soldiers Road.

"It looked like it was going out, but I think it could start up again."

Meanwhile, emergency services are dealing with a crash on Wilson Road North, near SH2.

A car and motorcylist have crashed. It's understood the motorcyclist sustained moderate injuries.
