Bay of Plenty residents are being warned to prepare for more heavy rain today as a complex low system continues to bring multiple bands of rain to northern and eastern parts of both islands.

The MetService says the low is expected to affect New Zealand through today, before slowly clearing on Tuesday.

'The heaviest falls are expected about Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Gisborne north of Tokomaru Bay, eastern Otago north of Otago Peninsula, Canterbury south of the Rakaia, and Marlborough.”

On Sunday, heavy rain and strong winds lashed the Bay, causing flooding in multiple parts of the region.

Homes in Ngongotaha had to be evacuated as a stream on Western Road burst its banks.
