Matapihi Road now open after train fire

UPDATE 3.20pm: Matapihi Road is now clear following a train fire.

Fire were forced to close the road after a small fire broke out on a locomotive causing it to stop in the middle of the Matapihi Road railway crossing.

Two fire crew were immediately at the scene.

"The fire is now out and the train is now clear on the railway crossing," says Fire Communication.

"We have now left the scene."

EARLIER 2.50pm: Matapihi Rd is blocked after a train on fire stopped across both lanes.

Police received a report of a train fire at Matapihi Road at around 2.08pm.

Matapihi Road has been closed off while a new locomotive arrives to assist in pulling the carriages away.

Traffic is now building up on Sh2 toward Maunganui Road.

2.25pm: A train is believed to be on fire near Matapihi Road, causing traffic congestion on the Bayfair roundabout.

Police received a report of a train fire at Matapihi Road at around 2.08pm.

Matapihi Road has been closed off while fire investigate.

A SunLive caller says there are two fire engines at the scene and traffic management is in place.
