UPDATE 5.45pm - Westbound traffic heading towards Tauranga has come to a standstill following a truck fire on Tauranga Eastern Link.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northen communications shift manager Scott Osmond says the fire happened just after 5pm.

"We received reports at about 5.07pm that a large truck was on fire on State Highway 2 Tauranga Eastern Link.

"This has happened about 200m from the Kaituna River bridge. The truck was well involved when crews arrived."

Scott says three trucks attended the fire including units from Papamoa, Maketu and the Greerton tanker.

"The motorway is closed heading towards the city and diversions are in place near Paengaora."

Scott says there are no indications as to what may have caused the fire as of yet.

A police media spokesperson says no injuries have been reported.

"Drivers should avoid the area, follow diversions, and take extra care if smoke is in the air."
