Elves working at New Zealand Post centres nationwide have received almost 100,000 letters to Santa Claus.

New Zealand Post spokesperson for the elves Michael Tull says elves are on track to get all the requests sent through to Santa at the North Pole on time.

This week he helped elves process 3000 letters and says it is interesting to learn what Kiwi children want for Christmas.

'I was really surprised a lot of them had really thought about what they wanted for Christmas, and it was not just all about the presents.”

Michael says many children wrote letters offering to give up their own presents to those in greater need.

'As opposed to the traditional scooters and iPods a lot of children simply wanted their families to be happy, and even offered to give up their presents for someone in greater need.”

One letter reads: ‘I know there are lots of kids out there that won't get much this Christmas so my biggest wish is for all those kids to have a happy Christmas and for you to give some of my presents to them.'

Most requested presents

The top wish list items for 2011 include iPads, iPhones and Playstation3s, while 3-7 year-olds are requesting Lego, scooters, books and dolls – with Barbie still reigning supreme.

Michael says bikes and skateboards feature on most children's lists, especially among the over eight-year-olds, while paddling pools and video games are also among the most requested items.

Elves have also reported some new additions to the Christmas wish list, including Beyblades, Nerf guns and Mighty Beanz.

All of the letters sent to Santa have been forwarded to the North Pole and Michael says children should expect a reply from Santa by Christmas Day.
