Fire are responding to a car fire in Welcome Bay.

The fire is said to be located on Welcome Bay Road by James Cook Drive.

Northern fire and emergency shift manager Caren Larkin confirms one appliance is on the scene.

'I believe the road is currently closed,” says Caren.

Traffic is delayed in the area with one lane of Welcome Bay Road shut heading into Tauranga.

Traffic in the opposing lane is being diverted down James Cook Drive.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.
