French tourists robbed

Two French tourists were robbed of nearly all their possessions at the old Papamoa service station on Saturday afternoon, say Tauranga police.

Two frenchmen were robbed behind the service station

The men were hitching south out of Mount Maunganui near Te Maunga about 4pm when they were picked up by a vehicle with two male occupants.

They were driven to the rear of the abandoned Shell service station on State Highway 2 near Welcome bay Road, Papamoa where they were assaulted.

Their packs, clothing, passports, all of their cash and money cards were stolen leaving the two French men without the means to support themselves.

They have been placed into accommodation in the Tauranga area until they can have funds forwarded from France.

A description of the assailants is expected later following a police interview with an interpreter present.

Anyone with information relevant to this investigation is asked to contact the Tauranga Police on 07 5774300. Alternatively information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

This is disgusting. Who would want to be a tourist in our country when this sort of thing happens. Also, when this newscast goes over seas, what do they also see. Building with heaps of graffiti. What does that also say for NZ. Come on Tauranga, clean up your act - both ways. Keep the tourists safe and make our bay look inviting.
