The Desert Road is closed this morning following a heavy dumping of snow.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising people to use SH49m SH4, SH47 and SH46 onto SH1 if travelling northbound and reverse if heading southbound.
A heavy snowfall warning was issued for the Desert Road yesterday.

The MetServices says it is likely snowing in Southland, Dunedin, clipping Banks Penninsula and in the southern Wararapa in the North Island as well.
There are several road closures in the South Island, with a number of places waking up to sub-zero temperatures.
MetService wouldn't have a clearer picture of the extent of the snow until people started sending in reports, says a post by Stuff.
"Judging by the temperatures of a lot of places - a lot of places are in the negatives - and it's raining. So it's probably pretty safe to say it's snowing."
