Update, 9.15am: Traffic is now flowing following emergency services extinguishing a vehicle fire at the top of the Kaimai Range, on State Highway 29.

"We received multiple 111 calls from 8.02am," says Fire and Emergency NZ Northern Shift Manager Ryan Geen.

"We despatched two fire appliances from Matamata and Greerton, so they were coming from both directions.

"And we notified Police and the Transport Operations Centre for traffic control as it's on a state highway."

A SunLive reader reports that two occupants of the vehicle had safely exited it.

Ryan says the brigade arrived at 8.23am "to a well-involved car on fire".

"Traffic was significantly slowed down.

"The fire was contained at 8.37am and the brigade left the scene at 9.09am. They left the incident with police and traffic management."

Earlier, 8.05am: Emergency services are on the way to the scene of a vehicle fire at the top of the Kaimai Range, on State Highway 29.

A SunLive reader reports that a car is on fire.

"It's right at the top of the Kaimais on the Tauranga side. The car's on fire. Two people have safely got out of the car.

"The car had pulled over to the side of the road so traffic was still able to get past on both sides. But there's fire engines on their way to put out the fire, so at least one lane may become blocked while they do that."

Police say emergency services are responding to a car fire on State Highway 29 near Old Kaimai Road.

"It does not appear anyone is In the vehicle," says a police spokesperson.

"The road was closed for a short time and is free now with 50kph speed."

Motorists are advised to take care in the area, and to be prepared for delays.

"Due to a car fire delays on SH29 should be expected near Hanga Rd," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson. "Allow extra time."

Fire out

Luckily it wasn't an electric vehicle then as it would still be burning . EV batteries are by all reports extremely difficult and dangerous as in effect a chemical fire of extreme heat and deep seated inside the battery . Fire fighters I believe haven't yet found a safe method

Interesting Kancho - that's something I didn't know. These EVs and their batteries are going to be a significant problem in the future - Governments don't see that yet!!

YES, you are not far off the mark. My mate in the Fire Service tells me that EV batteries that "fire up" are such that putting out the fire is almost impossible due to the location of the battery in the bottom of the vehicle, the "chemicals / material" in the batteries AND the temperature at which the "burn". It's almost a case of "let it burn itself out"!!
