He's used to tough questions, but The Chase star Shaun Wallace was not prepared for what Tauranga retirement village residents had in store for him today.

Wallace, known as 'The Dark Destroyer” stopped by Arvida Copper Crest Village in Pyes Pa today to meet with 84-year-old Betty Wakelin.

Betty was one of many retirement village residents across the country to submit questions to Wallace, who picked her question as the best during a charity competition.

What followed was a large crowd, star-struck energy and a question and answer session with the star from New Zealand's favourite British game show.

Questions and answers

One village resident brought up a question about a recent episode which aired in New Zealand last night.

'On last night's episode you said to Bradley you had grown a hair over summer, where is it?” the resident asked.

'That would be telling, it really would. There are ladies in the room,” Wallace remarked.

Another resident thought they could stump Wallace with a question about football history, and was surprised he answered the question before he'd even finished asking it.

'The 1923 FA Cup final,” the resident said as he began asking his question.

'Was between Bolton and West Ham United,” Wallace said.

The crowd laughed, but the resident was not yet ready to give up.

'Who won?” the resident asked.

Wallace then went through some trivia about the historic match before finally answering the man's question.

'They [Bolton] beat West Ham two-nil.”

Other questions from residents ranged from how long a typical show takes to shoot, to his relationship with The Chase host Bradley Walsh.

'I was the first chaser appointed back in 2008. I had to do ten auditions in front of an ITV commissioning panel to show them the show was a viable concept.

'When I first met Bradley 14 years ago, I had seen Bradley as a comedian and on Coronation Street. I thought ‘oh Bradley Walsh, he'd make a great host'. He then told me his idea for the show other than asking the questions was to be on the side of the contestant. I thought it was a masterful idea.

'Bradley has actually intimated that I am the best person he gets on with. I'm not sure how true that is but we do seem to have a great rapport.”

Villagers star-struck

Bethlehem Shores residents Jenny Davis and Liz Maddren both say they have watched The Chase for 'years” and were absolutely stoked to meet a chaser in person.

'I thought it was great, he's got an amazing persona,” says Jenny.

'I still sit and watch it today, it's great when you are getting tea ready,” says Liz.

Liz says the quizzing and 'personalities” are the best part of the show, which regularly tests their knowledge.

'Bradley Walsh is a fabulous host. They all seem like they love people and it all comes off so natural.”

Betty's question

Betty says the event was 'absolutely fabulous”, and was very happy to have her photo taken with Shaun.

To ask the winning question behind Wallace's visit, Betty says she first had to do some research.

'I searched him on Google and saw his mum suffers from dementia and he is right into physical fitness.

'I decided to ask him ‘do you believe physical exercise is essential to keeping your mind and memory sharp to be able to be a successful chaser?'”

Betty then got a call and was told out of all the questions from across the country, Shaun thought hers was the best, and said he does believe exercise is essential to keeping his memory sharp for the game show.

I'm a big fan of the show...

...but Shaun would be my least favorite Chaser. I think he may don a persona for the show which is not appealing. Seeing him in this context makes me revise my opinion more positively towards him.
