Welcome Bay residents of a quiet cul-de-sac are mourning the loss of two pet kittens that were viciously attacked and killed by three dogs on Saturday morning.
The dogs have now been captured and impounded. They killed the kittens when they cornered them one by one on a property at Falcon Drive.
'Jar' on right and two other alleged cat killers are now impounded.
The youngest kitten, 1-year-old Missy, was killed after being torn apart by one of the three dogs and three-year-old Oscar was fatally wounded and died later.
Claudia Kansley woke to the horrible cry of her neighbour's kitten, Missy, being ripped apart by three dogs at about 8.30am on Saturday. The dogs are well-known to the area.
'It was just absolutely going for it. So I got up and saw three dogs just tearing it apart.”
Missy's owner Carmen Bidois says the family was ‘absolutely devastated' when they heard the news, particularly her 10-year-old son.
''We were devastated, she's our family pet. He's still a bit teary.”
She says she will use the incident to educate her two children of the dangers of animals roaming free in the area.
'Part of this is we will be able to show them that it's not tolerable for these dogs to be roaming around and we will follow through.
'They have obviously have got a killer instinct in them. '
Carmen's husband and about four neighbours from Falcon Drive chased the dogs and managed to contain them on a nearby property on the top of Waitaha Road.
Claudia says when they got to the top of the street they were approached by a man driving a four wheeled drive vehicle who interfered by distracting the dogs that were able to make a getaway.
'He told us to leave them alone because they are valuable hunting dogs.”
She says the man appeared to be purposely trying to stop them from catching the dogs.
'It was a really long morning.”
The dog ‘Jar' has a large tumour hanging from the side of his body and Claudia says when she recognised the trio she contacted Tauranga City Council and was upset that only one person was sent.
Council animal services team leader Brent Lincoln says the guard is fully trained and conducted correct safety techniques to lure the dogs into capture, but he was unsuccessful due to the nature of the dogs.
Brent says luring dangerous animals by using food is the initial training technique to catch the dog.
'That's a normal method. But because of the nature of the dogs they weren't co-operating.
'It's really difficult to catch a roaming dog that doesn't want to be caught.”
Council has contacted the owner of the black dog ‘Jar' and is conducting further investigations into Saturday morning's incident.
The three dogs involved in the killing are believed to be unregistered.

When will the full force of the law be thrown at these owners of dogs that roam free! The laws are there, it seems that nobody is prepared to utilise them to the full. I was sickened to read this article. Have been considering moving down to this lovely area, but now fear for my own lovely cat as he would be no match for dogs like this. I know here in Auckland dog owners let there dogs loose after dark so that they can roam free of will to "feed" themselves, whether it be somebodies beloved pet or the local farmers sheep. And to see that they are unregistered, it is appalling. All dog owners who DO register and follow and keep within the laws get penal;ised by the few inconsiderate so called human beings. The sooner the law punishes these people to the full force of the law, the sooner this may be stopped.

The Council dog handlers need to sort their stuff out. We have had a neighbours aggressive staffy roaming our little street for a whole week, chasing cats, trying to get to other dogs locked in their own yards, and growling at people who dare venture out their own houses. Council have been called heaps of times and they wont do a thing about it!! Whats up with that?? Guess they wont until one of our loved pets gets attacked and killed like the poor kittens in this story. Not good tcc

I have seen the black dog with the tumour roaming around regularly and it has been aggressive toward me. I saw it last week tearing it's way through a garbage bag by the roadside. I would have reported it but the last time I reported a very aggressive Pitbull I was told by Brent and his staff that I had to wait until it bit someone before they could do anything. What a waste of time they are, yet you have Councillors saying they are not going to tolerate this sort of thing - well try telling your own staff Councillors. I thought it was an offence for dogs to be unregistered and/or roaming free. I may try to coax council staff to do something with some chocolate brownies if that's the correct method. Phht.

It is strange that dogs should be kept on a leash and have their owner follow them round with a doggy crap bag, yet cats are free to go and dig up somebody else's garden and crap all over it. Perhaps cats should be on a leash.

get real, Pomfart. Would you have cats on a leash ready for roaming dogs to maul to death as they did with these kittens? Yeah right. Most of the time roaming dogs go onto private property to get loved pets. Funny, I've never seen a kitten corner a person and frighten the living daylights out of them. You've obviously never lost a pet to a roaming dog

You can't control a cat, but you can control a dog! Cats have mastersw, dogs have slaves~! When you can learn to keep a cat inside a section let me know!!!!

The problem here is twofold irresponsable owners who should not have dogs and a useless council that thinks a 50 cent piece of plastic is $72.00 worth of service. These could be addressed by registering dog owners not the dogs and the council employing dog rangers that actually care about the welfare of all not just thier paypackets.

Cats dont go around killing and biting....seems you have an issue with cats crapping in your garden....maybe theres a reason for that!

The commentators here have the typical simplistic view of the self-righteous. Gun-toting council officers available 24/7 ready to shoot dogs in an urban area - yes that sounds very realistic. Of course putting aside the obvious danger, nobody would want to have to pay the additional costs would they?

The picture and story absolutely disgusts me and scares me to death. This looks like it probably is (A pack attack of trained valuable hunting dogs) as was stated by the guy in the 4WD....If they are, take your bloody valuable hunting dogs and go and live as far up in the hills where there are no pet cats and as far away from people living in suburbia. This absolutely infuriates me. These dogs terrorise people and kill pets, yet the Council don't/won't/can't do anything until some person gets bitten or mauled....This is an atrocious attitude by Council. Every threatening dog, should be taken into custody by the pound….Lets change the laws around these dangerous dogs. We can't take out protection orders out on dogs, but we can on humans, (for our own protection)…..Maybe that should change, everyone needs to report a menacing dog with three strikes and the dog is gone. Good riddance.

If I was bitten by a roaming dog, you're correct, I would complain. That's because I'm a human being and my rights trump those of any animal, including cats crapping in my garden or dogs that bite me. Cat owners talk rubbish about not controlling cats, doing what's natural, etc.,,. The dogs were doing what's natural. Or were dogs put on this planet with leashes attached? You could give cats a litter tray in your house/property and clear up your own mess but no, you teach it to wander off into somebody else's garden to crap on them so they can step in it and pick it up. As long as you don't have that problem eh? If you choose to keep an animal that you have no idea what it's doing, on whose property, at any given time, don't complain if nature takes it's course.

your statment has made me smile.....i have never heard of people "teaching" there cats to wander off and poo in other people properties (but thanks for the great mental Picture)I think the reason your comments are found to be so offensive is becuase it sounds as though you are condonning this behaivour, even though you may not like cats, these kittens that were killed were someones much loved pets, and your comments (like the majority you make) are selfish and offensive.
