Rotorua Boys' High School is geared up for adventure with a $20,000 grant from New Zealand Community Trust.

The grant has helped with the purchase of 12 canoes, lifejackets, and a trailer.

"This funding will enable us to provide our students with the opportunity to explore local water environments through a culturally appropriate lens, enhance their water safety knowledge and develop a deeper appreciation for our local environment," says RBHS Business Manager Nawa Ruckes.

"It will not only teach them the basic principles of water safety and physical fitness, but also important leadership and teamwork skills."

Nawa says NZCT's ongoing support has enabled them to complete various projects that offer their students outside the classroom experiences they might not otherwise have been able to enjoy, including regular support of the school’s Hillary Outdoor Education programme at Tongariro.

"These added opportunities also enable students to develop self-confidence, enjoy a positive social environment, gain a better understanding of interpersonal relationships, share life experiences, and meet students from other schools," says Nawa.

“For a myriad of reasons, young people need to spend more time in the outdoors, RBHS understands this, and we’re delighted to contribute to the school’s ‘classroom without walls’," says NZCT’s grants, marketing and communications GM Ben Hodges.

"Thank you to our Rotorua venues - Kaspers Sports Bar, Mo’s Bar and the West End Tavern for their help in raising the funds that made this grant possible."
