Evacuations in Waihi Beach

Waihi Beach Road is expected to be closed for the next few days after flash flooding hit the beachside town north of Katikati overnight causing evacuations at the Top 10 holiday park.

Torrential down pours flooded parts of the Bay of Plenty on Friday night.

Around 11pm emergency services were called to a flooding hazard on Waihi Beach Road after torrential rain damaged parts of the road, trapping a car.

Waihi Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Moe Stevens says water poured across the road tearing some parts of the tarseal.

Moe says a car was found trapped underwater and covered in tarseal.

'It was covered in tarseal. The back window had blown out.”

Police were still trying to rescue the car around midnight on Saturday. There was no one in the car when it was found. Police have notified the owners of the car's whereabouts.

At the Waihi Beach Top 10 Holiday Park about 70 people were evacuated from the low lying campsite on Beach Road.

Firefighters were called to help evacuate people and used a rope line as the water had reached up to 70cm deep.

A road closure on Waihi Beach Road is still in place. State Highway 2 is now open.
