Library campaign goes political

The fight to get Greerton's leaking library rebuilt is going political, with Friends of the Library advising people not to vote for council candidates who won't support it.

Friends of the Library president Kate Clark.

The stance is being taken after councillors again knocked back the library re-development even though $1.8million of the money is available, and has to be spent on a library in that area.

Friends of the Library is holding a public meeting at the Greerton Village Hall on August 30 at 12.30pm to discuss the issues and has also created a Facebook page – Greerton Library 900.

Keynote speakers at the meeting include Bob Harvey, the previous Mayor of Waitakere City, who oversaw the construction of five libraries in his tenure. Beth Bowden, from Tauranga, will also be speaking on why libraries matter to communities.

'They have been asked for 20 years to upgrade this library,” says Friends of the Library president Kate Clark.

'It's been in the annual plan, and the district plan for 10 years, and they keep saying ‘no'.

'So unless you support the Greerton Library 900 campaign in this election, we are going to ask people to not vote for you.

'We think 20 years is just ridiculous. Over one third of Tauranga's population is using a library with only eight per cent of the city's library space. Over one third is using less than 10 per cent of the square metreage.”

There are about 45,000 people living in the Greerton Library catchment, which includes Welcome Bay, Maugatapu, Ohauiti and Oriopi/Pyes Pa.

'So that's what this campaign is about. After 20 years of being told ‘no' and certainly after 10 years of it being in the annual plan and being put off, and put off, I started getting calls from the community,” says Kate.

The library work was knocked back during annual plan deliberations. The councillors on the Greerton Library taskforce; Terry Molloy, Larry Baldock, Bill Grainger and Tony Christiansen, who have been working behind the scenes for a year on the project, were outvoted.

At the time David Stewart said the timing is bad as council is looking at dealing with serious flooding issues.

The flooding in the suburbs of Matua, Mount Maunganui and Arataki was also mentioned by former supporters Bill Faulkner and Wayne Moultrie as the reason they changed their minds.

Catherine Stewart says the continued support by the taskforce members showed they were too close to the issue to see the bigger picture. Mayor Stuart Crosby moved the issue be put off for a year.

Waste of time as there is no money left to spend on anything

Ratepayers already fund 4 libraries costing $millions

Sorry but I won't vote for any councillor who supports this costly and unnecessary extension. Some people must live in cuckoo land if they think ratepayers can afford yet more money. The supporters should dip into their own large salaries and get the new library built. Don't burden average ratepayers even more.

why is your need, greater than mine, (getting rid of surplus water), wait in line, maybe you need to except that a Mount boardwalk is more important, but do not even try and stand in the way of this towns drainage issues.

Sorry to disagree but

I would prefer to see Tauranga served by a single centrally located library on a much larger scale than we currently have. We don't need, nor can we afford, four libraries. Can't wait to see the hornets nest I've just stirred!!!

FUDGING

The G. library is fine as it is - what leaks are you talking about, the size is ok and it meets the bookworm communities needs end of story.Where does this piece of nonsense come from that the $1.8m has to be spent on a Greerton Library.Like it or lump it me hearties because the best option is to shut it down and have an internet cafe scenario where you can order and return books by courier from white elephant City Central. If any gormless candidate supports this arrant nonsense and accepts wasting money on this lemon DON'T VOTE FOR THEM.!!

Private public partnerships of existing libraries would be th solution. However building more or extending to make more capacity would produce a poor rate of return to council. Everyday we are all faced with technology that provides free access to information on mobile and fixed devices. Our children live in a different world now. The future generations of tauranga would be left with running a obsolete asset. If tauranga council spends more money on white elephants then we all will suffer higher rates to sustain this poor decision. Im 34 the last time I used the library was when I was 16. I pay ratesx2 in TCC and rates x4 in westernbay it really annoys me to pay for something that clearly doesnt give a good rate of return to community as it once did. Hands up for those who would run libraries as a business, im hearing crikets....

cut debt

Sounds like the council has already spent way ahead of time so maybe these things that arn't vital infrastructure need to work out how to pay for themselves somehow incl baypark

No flood mitigation impact

Truth is folks, Crs. Baldock, Molloy, Christiansen, Grainger were correct in their assertions that the decision to delay was just a 'vote catching' PR exercise. The Greerton library project in NO way reduces Council's ability to appropriately respond to stormwater and flooding issues. No, I don't support the library expansion as proposed, being short sighted and equally a 'vote catching' exercise. Long term, why would you invest over $3 million in a new library complex and design it around a 'Turkish Takeaway'? Unbelievable! Yes, the library as past it's use by date, as has the original intent and purpose of libraries. Looks like zero votes for this candidate - frowned on by both sides!

Prioritise

Put the library on the back burner, there are many more priorities to deal to before a library, Storm water, Loan reductions to name a couple. Stop and have a think about the future need for libraries in every neighbourhood, the fact this newspaper is available on the net should hint at the future of the written word may not be paper based for much longer.
