Mum sentenced for jandal hit

A Tauranga mother has been sentenced to 240 hours' community work for assaulting her daughter with a jandal.

The 28-year-old was granted name suppression by Judge Louis Bidois when she appeared for sentencing in Tauranga District Court yesterday.

She pleaded guilty in December to four counts of assault on a child.

The charges stem from allegations the woman assaulted her four children, all aged under 12-years-old, some involving a jandal and folded belt.

In sentencing yesterday the judge told the 28-year-old her behaviour was irresponsible and disgraceful.

'There is no doubt the children would have been upset and hurt by the assault.

The judge ordered the woman to undertake a parenting course and put her under 12 months' intensive supervision.

Sad indictment on our powers that be

Wow, as a kid I had a jandal, a folded belt, a jug cord, a piece of bamboo..... but guess what...as a result I have respect for other people, others property and my elders. it's sad that new laws are made for the minority. I agree that they are needed, but there is no mention of where this mum hit her children. Big difference between back of the leg or backside, than across the head. This is where judges should be allowed discretion.

Deserved??

I assume the kids may have deserved some punishment at times but here we have this stupid law that has resulted in a mother being given a sentence far greater than some people receive for much lesser 'crimes!' Community service will take her away from the kids at a time when reconciliation with her at home would be far more positive.

There are other ways than hitting to make children behave or punish them but this has to be learned by the parents and there should be free courses to teach them, good luck for both the parents and the children!
