Smoke seen billowing from a Fonterra milk tanker saw firefighters called to a truck fire on State Highway 29, near Old Kaimai Road, this morning.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Scott Osmond says Greerton Fire Brigade was called to the scene at the request of police about 8.40am.

The Fonterra tanker caught fire while travelling on the Kaimais today.

He says the fire was in the engine bay of the truck travelling towards Hamilton and is now out.

'It's nothing major.”

The incident didn't affect traffic as the truck is off to the side of the road, but road works in the area may be causing delays.

Motorists are advised to drive with care in the area today.
