Boats break free in storm

UPDATE 3PM: Another three boats are reported to have broken off their moorings and beached at Omokoroa.

An Omokoroa resident, who did not wish to be named, said a large yacht, smaller yacht and launch have all come ashore at Cooney Reserve off Margaret Drive.

Strong winds and rough seas have caused a number of boats to break free from their moorings overnight with one smashing into rocks on The Strand.

Police were called to the incident next to Dive Crescent sometime after 10pm and reported it to the fishing boat's owner Tauranga Fishing Charters.

Scott, from Tauranga Fishing Charters who didn't want his last name published, has been with the boat since 4am.

'There is a bit of damage to the boats down on the wharf.

'The boats are all tied up, sort of half on and half off the wharf.”

Scott says one of the boats snapped one of the main poles on the wharf.

'It's snapped and is half floating in the water.”

With the help of others, Scott is working to secure the boats this morning.

At Plummers Point a launch is wedged precariously between rocks and the jetty.

A nearby resident noticed the boat had broken from its mooring while on a morning walk about 9am.

She says the owners are currently with the launch assessing the damage.

A couple of other yacht owners are also braving the storm to save their headsails at Plummers Point.

Tauranga Police Sergeant Chris Summerville says there have been lots of storm related calls overnight.

'We have had boulders and trees come down.

'We got jobs for Omanawa with trees down and boulders down on Poripori Road. There were a lot of things like that.” Chris says there are no road closures in the Western Bay area.

'There have been no crashes yet either.”
