Flood discussion for Matua

Matua's flooding problem will be discussed at tonight's Tauranga City Council Community Development Committee meeting being held at Matua Hall.

The 6.30pm meeting is the second of such meetings where the council takes the committee to the community to discuss matters relevant to that suburb.

Flood maps of Matua. Similar maps of other city zones will be available as the mapping progresses.

Tonight's meeting sees the unveiling of Matua flood maps, part of a city wide re-examination of stormwater and flooding problems that are making themselves apparent.

Previous city councils ignored earlier staff recommendations to spend up on flood control and instead limited the spending on flood control to $5.53 million a year.

While the council pays to put in stormwater in new subdivisions, through the infrastructure development code, it has not been planning capacity for future growth and infill development.

There is no set level of service in existing developed areas. Faced with the result of the previous policy, council has now decided it will take a strategic approach to stormwater management.

Recent floods in Matua and Mount Maunganui have focussed the council on dealing with particular problem areas. An additional $5 million is being raised through a rating levy and there is an ongoing mapping programme.

Council staff will be present tonight to explain the maps and how the Matua solutions fit into the ongoing programme.

For the coming year, the focus is on continuing modelling, working in the Mount Industrial Area and the initial preparatory works at Matua, including land purchase.

Also on the agenda for tonight's 6.30pm meeting, are presentations from the Otumoetai Railway Gardens Society presenting a wish list to council for added security, a toilet, ride on mower car parking and extended water lines.

Richard Kluit from the Matua Residents' Association will also address the meeting.

They cause even floodwater to choose another path, once more plenty of theory but still no sign of any decent storm water system, NOT just for Matua and the Mount, but the rest of us who also suffer, maps will not keep the water out, but hey council have to justify someones salary.
