Minor ammonia scare at Sanfords

An early morning ammonia leak at Sulphur Point was isolated quicker than firefighters could arrive.

Emergency services were called to the Sanford ammonia plant on Cross Road about 5am.

Tauranga Fire Brigade senior station officer Len Sabin says the incident was relatively minor with the 'tiny leak” dealt with by the onsite engineer.

With the leak isolated and of no risk to anyone, firefighters talked to the engineer before leaving.

'We didn't really get into it because he was talking less than a cup of ammonia so it wasn't a big issue,” says Len.

'Being outside with the strong wind there was really nothing for us to do there.”

Mount Maunganui Fire Brigade was called as back up.
