Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is an unofficial world record holder after breaking the previous record for the simultaneous dipping of toasted bread soldiers into eggs today.

Staff and students at the Windermere campus lined the tables at lunchtime and managed to dip soldiers into 207 eggs to claim a new record for soldiers dipped at a single venue.

Students gather at BOP Polytechnic to dip toasted soldiers into eggs for a new world record.

The previous record was set by soldiers of the Allied Rapid Response Corps at Imjin Barracks, Gloucestershire, who managed to dip into 178 soldiers on January 22 this year.

To make the world record official, people taking part had to dip soldiers into an egg and then take four bites.

Jacob Matthews, 28, one of the hundreds of hungry students taking part, says it is cool to be part of a world record attempt, though admitting he is not a huge fan of eggs.

The electrical engineering student originally came down to watch but was roped in as organisers called for a couple more people to sneak past the 200 mark.

BOP Polytechnic student experience coordinator Kirsten Crossan says it may not be deemed official for about another six to eight weeks.

Video evidence of each numbered person entering the event needs to be compiled and sent away with witness statements to the officials at Guinness World Records.
