Brakes put on free parking

Free parking may go ahead in the central Tauranga city but not until a full council report has been finalised to weigh up the best option.

Tauranga City Councillors today approved looking at a free parking trial for the CBD but rejected a proposal from Mainstreet to immediately implement a two hour free parking scheme trial.

A proposed three month free parking trial will not go ahead immediately.

Mainstreet made an application to council eight days ago proposing a three month trial of two hour's free parking.

Instead council has directed staff to take a proper look at the proposal and produce a business case upon which a more considered decision can be made.

Among criticism levelled at the Mainstreet proposal is that the three month period is too short to gauge the full impact. There was also mention that the scheme doesn't make any allowance for the possible ongoing success and its economic ramifications.

The council report is expected to be ready for the September meeting.

Meanwhile everyone goes to Bayfair a little longer and the CBD has a few more rigamortus type convulsions ...

Now we know...

...that parking fees are an integral part of the council's income and not simply there to maintain parking 'turnover' as has often been espoused. Now we have the big coercive stick being waved - it will cost ratepayers! I would like to know how much it has cost to install the current system and all the other quirky ideas for pay parking. Long live Fraser Cove, the Palms, Bayfair, Bethlehem and others. You deserve the patronage while the council muddles on trying to cope with and absorb common-sense public opinion!
